Reading is important because it is a critical skill used to communicate with others. It is the very thing you are doing right this second. It allows us to communicate ideas to people we have never met, or even to people who have not been born yet! It should be mentioned that the invention of written language is one of the catalysts which led to the creation of civilization.

Math is important because we can use it to describe and solve everyday problems ("How many letters should I mail?" "Do I have enough money to buy all of my groceries?" "Do I have to gas up at this gas station? Or will I make it to the next one 90 miles further down the highway?").

Math is also critically important if you ever enter into a technical field ("How much pressure will there be behind this dam?" "How hot will the air get inside of this jet turbine?" "How much power does this circuit draw?" "How do I efficiently route packets on the internet?", etc etc).
