7^3 × X^2 = 7 × 7 × 7 × X × X

Seven cubed tells you that 7 is multiplied three time, and the X squared tells you that you multiply X twice.

I have used capital Xs as the times symbol (×) is very similar to a lower case x.

This is why in algebra the times symbol is dropped and any two symbols next to each other are multiplied together, eg 5xy means 5 times x times y and not 5 times y.
