The Battle near El Guettar occurred during 28 March to 1 April 1943. The 47th Infantry Regiment of the US 9th Division attacked Hills 290 and 369 and the 39th Infantry Regiment took Hill 774 (not 772). German defenses on Hill 369 was blocking Hiway 15. At 5:35am, the Germans attacked the 2nd Battalion of 47th Regiment as they were moving into position. Company E lost 179 men. Germans collected 242 prisoners. Then another battalion got lost for 36 hours. The 2nd Battalion of 39 Regiment was ordered to take Hill 369. But they mis-read the maps and attacked Hill 290 but were repulsed. On March 29th, Patton revised the attack plan to include the 1st Armored Division attacking down Hiway 15. The BENSON force was comprised of 7 battalions. The attack was stopped but they held their ground until the Germans finally withdrew on April 6. The casualties of the 9th Division was 868. The 9th Division lost 5 of 6 battalion commanders and 10% of their division. They expended more than 1 Million rifle and machine gun rounds in that week.
