60, 72, 84, 90 and 96 all have 12 factors; tied for the most of two-digit numbers.
Any number in the 4 times table: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, ... There are two easy tests to see if a number has 4 as a factor (ie is divisible by 4, or, put another way, is a multiple of 4): 1) The last 2 digits of the number is a multiple of 4. 2) If the sum of the last (ones) digit plus twice the tens digit is a multiple of 4, then so is the original number. The second test can be repeated on the sum; so if the summing is repeated until a single digit remains, then the number has 4 as a factor only if this single digit is 4 or 8.
To work this out, first write down the greatest 4 digit number 9999 then divide this by 12 9999/12 = 833.25 Take the number before the decimal point (833) and multiply this by 12 833*12 = 9996 9996 is the greatest four digit number that is divisible by 12.
12 is the only two digit number which is a factor of 12.
