When to cancel out in algebra?

You cancel out whenever you have the same factor on both the top and bottom of a fraction. (These are called the numerator and denominator, respectively.) For example: 18/42 = (6 x 3)/(6 x 7). So I would cancel out the 6's. So 18/42 = 3/7.
