One type of cable is called pyrotenax, a mineral insulated cable using magnesium oxide to separate the conductors. It has been in the market place for years and was the substitute for rigid conduit and explosion proof devices.

In Canada there is another type of cable called Teck cable. It was designed for Teck-Hughes Gold Mines in Kirkland Lake, Ontario where a heavy duty cable was needed because of the rough service that is involved in the mining industry. It is now widely used through out Canada as a general wiring cable. Manufactured in many sizes it is used from service entrances to underground direct bury installations. New Teck connectors have been designed to fit this cable allowing it to be used in explosion proof areas.

There has been resistance to use this type of cable in the US as large manufactures, by boycotting the government, to keep it out of their market place unless they are the sole distributor of the cable.
