Dudley W Woodard (1881-1965) was a gifted African-American mathematician. He was born in Galveston, Texas, where his father had a position in the Post Office. He was awarded a PhD in mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania on June 28, 1928, and was the second African American in the world to earn a PhD degree in mathematics.

His research paper, On two dimensional analysis situs with special reference to the Jordan Curve Theorem, was the first published by an African American.
