The biggest and brightest star we know of is S Doradus. It is a "hypergiant", and is so enormously bright that it can be seen with the naked eye - EVEN THOUGH IT IS IN ANOTHER GALAXY.

S Doradus is burning its nuclear fuel so quickly that it cannot prevent exploding as a supernova within the next couple of million years. In fact, it may ALREADY have gone supernova- but since it is 180,000 light years away, we may not know it for a hundred thousand years or more, when the light finally makes its way here.
