Are there certain things that it has to encompass in order to make it "formal" rather than "informal"? Guessing, I would try something like "Joy is the feeling you get when something great happens, or someone you love is near." If, of course, that is what you think joy is. Looking at a dictionary definition might help you to figure out your own formal definition.
