Americans build the fastest cars in the world.

In terms of absolute top speed, the SSC Ultimate Aero TT has the record at 257.44 mph (beating the runner-up Bugatti Veyron 16.4). Only 24 Ultimate Aeros were produced, though, calling into question whether or not it can really be considered a "production car"

The 2010 Dodge Viper is among the fastest cars ever built and is unquestionably a production model, being sold in large numbers at a mass market price. The ACR version currently has the production car record of fastest lap times at Laguna Seca and the Nurburgring. The previous record at the Nurburgring was held by the Corvette ZR-1, but the Viper ACR beat it by over 4 seconds, meaning the top 2 highest single lap times at the European track are both registered by American cars.
