36 = (6 × 6) = ((2 × 3) × (2 × 3) = [2] × [2] × [3] × 3

120 = (10 × 12) = ((2 × 5) × (3 × 4)) = ((2 × 5) × (3 × (2 × 2))) = [2] × [2] × 2 × [3] × 5

→ gcf(12, 54) = 2 × 2 × 3 = 12

The factor tree will show you the prime factorization. You still need to compare that to another number to get a GCF.

3 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 5 = 405

3 x 5 = 15, the HCF

Prime factorization is easier.
