The simplest way to go about this, so you know you did not make a mistake is make a factor tree to find the LCM of both 40 and 18

so for

40

8-----5

4---2

2--2

LCM = 5*2*2*2

for

18

6----3

3---2

LCM = 3*3*2

LCM for 40 and 18 = 5*2*2*2*3*3=360

LCM would equal the LCD if you were using this to find lowest common denominator! LCD=360

so for 40 you would have to mulptiply 9 times and for 18 multiply 20 times!
