The largest stingray, the short-tail stingray, can grow upwards of 2.1 m (6.9 ft) across. The pelagic stingray, which is one of the more common stingrays, can reach widths of 56 cm (23 in) in length when fully grown.
The distinctive white "eye" of the stingray skin is often used as a design feature. This is the remnant of a dorsal fin left after the stingray's evolutionary journey. The eye may appear as a single diamond shape, or may run the length of the skin.
The largest type of stingray is the giant freshwater stingray (Himantura chaophraya), which can grow up to 16 feet (5 meters) in length and weigh over 1,300 pounds (600 kilograms).
