AnswerThere are no specific statistics on how many alcoholics there are in the U.S.A., because some alcoholics go through life without seeing a doctor until it's too late (liver failure generally.) Only 8% of Americans are said to be dependent on alcohol but .06% are diagnosed. The problems is that other health conditions are usually visible and the physician will usually miss the fact the patient in question is an alcoholic. 8% of Americans are only properly diagnosed' 40% are depressed and drink excessively because of it; 65% are diabetics and 70% of patients suffer from hypertension. The disease is treated, but often the fact that a certain patient could be an alcoholic is missed by many physicians. over 100% who were diagnosed with alcohol problems did not seek out any type of treatment.
