Athens was trying to dominate the Greek world. Sparta's allies demanded that Sparta restrain this, and it tried to get Athens to back off. Athens persisted and war ensued. This Peloponnesian war was important to Sparta as it was fought to maintain the balance of power in the Greek world rather than Athens continuing to expand the empire it had created incorporating 180 cities under its domination.
