Because they give off RF energy. This Radio Frequency signal will interfere with any radio near by. Cheap shop lights are the worst. More expensive well made fluorescent lights limit the amount of interference and should not be a problem. A loose ground wire will also cause the light to hum and interfere even more. High Intensity lights are best for an unheated garage.

Make sure the fluorescent lights are grounded properly. Also check the pin connections to make sure they are tight. Also the lights must be manufactured for residential use. If you still have the interference then replace the lights with modern ones, but first see if you are getting the interference through the lines of from RF interference. If battery operated radios still have the noise then there is not much else you can do. If it only effects radios plugged in then you can install a RFI inline filter. I would suspect you have a loose ground.
It can be interferance caused by Fluorescent lights, Transformers, (such as battery chargers) switchless lights, you name it. Anything that plugs into electric current in your home can in one form or another. In your quest to find the problem, you will often overlook what the actual problem is.
Static coming from some but not all speakers is usually caused by a loose connection at that speaker or a loose speaker itself. It can also be cause by a wire with insulation worn off, and touching a body part.Static coming from some but not all speakers is usually caused by a loose connection at that speaker or a loose speaker itself. When calling in an unexploded ordnance (UXO), the minimum safe distance for radio transmission is typically at least 300 meters (about 1,000 feet) away from the suspected site. This distance helps to minimize the risk of detonation caused by radio frequency interference. However, specific guidelines may vary depending on local regulations and the type of ordnance involved, so it's important to follow established safety protocols.
