Well over 50% of abused women go back to their abuser or pick another abusive partner. It's not because they enjoy being abused, but the abuser has brain-washed them so badly by controlling their lives and instilling fear into them (sometimes using their children to control the victim) that she feels she has nowhere to go and sometimes, is embarrassment or feels she will be ridiculed by her peers, not to mention in some States the laws are just not there to protect an abused woman. Out of the other 30 - 40% that get away from their abusive partner 32% of those will find another abusive partner. No, they don't look for the abusive type of man, but rather a man that will tell them what to do as they have had a life of someone telling them what to do,and what to think and say for years. They don't have a mentor or anyone to look up too and they don't readily see the signs of abuse. Abusers are sneaky and they can appear to be the nicest person you'd ever want to meet. They could be one of your family members, a male friend or even a neighbor. It happens with all races, rich or poor. They hide their true selves so easily, but once the door is closed in their home all hell can break loose. Abusers are about control and it's because they are not confident within themselves or they have grown up in an abusive environment themselves where they have been physically abused. Thankfully laws are being changed and "Women's Abuse Houses" are turning up more and more in Canada and the U.S. with programs to help these women be safe, take programs to learn what the Cycle of Abuse is about and help these women become independent and able to be out in society on their own. It doesn't matter. If someone was physically abusive toward you it certainly violates trust. You have to ask if you can ever trust again. Will you be waiting for it to happen again? Will you be worried that if you say or do the wrong thing that there will be another incident of abuse? That's no basis for a relationship.
