The larger the whole number corresponding to the ratio of frequencies of

combined tones is, the more dissonant they sound together.

Example:

Smallest possible whole-number ratio of 2 frequencies = 2/1 = 2 . . . the "octave".

Larger ratios sound more dissonant.
