If you are trying to figure out the 40lb bags of dirt they sell at the store... It takes about 50 of those to equal 1 (cubic) yard of dirt. I just had to do the research on it too.

there are 3 feet in a yard so i figure cubic feet and cubic yard would be the same principle. 1 1/2 bags would seem right.

I see a problem. Yes cubic yard is 3' * 3' *3' or 27 cubic feet. but each bag is 0.75 cubic feet now he want 1.5 cubic feet so 2 bags give you 1.5 cubic feet 0.75 per bag. Now if it was 1.5 cubic yards then:

27/0.75 = 36, bags per cubic yard so 36*1.5 =54 bags for 1.5 cubic yards

If a contractor brings a truckload of topsoil to your property, he might call it a 5-yard load, but he really means "5 cubic yards". Top soil, mulch, etc are measured by volume. There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard (3ft x 3ft x 3ft).

One site I saw said that one yard of topsoil weighs about a ton (2000 lbs).

It really doesn't make sense to multiply cubic feet by cubic feet. ft3 x ft3 gives you ft6, which would really only make sense in a universe that has 6 (or more) dimensions.

To get a volume, you'll have to multiply three lengths, for example, 3 ft x 2 ft x 1.5 ft, or an area by a length, for example, 6 square ft. x 1.5 ft. (this is equivalent to the previous example).

27 cubic feet = 1 cubic yard

1.5 cubic feet = (1.5/27) = 1/18th of a cubic yard

You need 18 of them.
