∙ 16y agoWhen run exposed on walls in unfinished basements the 2005 NEC clarifies that the entire length of NM cable run exposed below the "framing members" above that wall, must be protected from physical damage. Also, the end of the protecting sleeve must have a non-metalic bushing. The NEC does not specify a measurement, but it refers to "in exposed work". Everything below the beam is "exposed". The workbook also shows sample sketches that show the protecting sleeve going all the way up to the ceiling beam. If running the cables on the underside of the framing members (beams) physical protection is not required. But smaller size cables require a running board between the cable and the beams. reference 2005 NEC 334.15C

∙ 16y agoNon-metallic sheathed cable in the USA is typically considered protected from physical damage when it is installed at a height of 8 feet or more above the finished floor level. This guideline is meant to prevent accidental damage to the cable from activities such as drilling or nailing into walls.

No, the uninsulated conductor in nonmetallic-sheathed cable should only be used as the equipment grounding conductor. It should not be used for any other purpose to avoid creating a safety hazard.
For 14/2 NM cable, a 14 AWG equipment grounding conductor is used.
THHN is a single-conductor wire typically used in conduit for indoor wiring, while Romex is a brand of non-metallic sheathed cable that contains multiple insulated conductors in a flexible plastic jacket. THHN must be used inside conduit, while Romex can be run along surfaces or in walls without conduit.
"Sheathed" is pronounced as "sheethd," with the emphasis on the first syllable. The "ea" in the word is pronounced as a long "e" sound, like in the word "seed."
NEC, Article 336 covers the use, installation and construction specifications for nonmetallic-sheathed cable. Nonmetallic-sheathed cable may be used for either exposed or concealed wiring.
Yes, nonmetallic sheathed cable is commonly permitted in residential wiring for power and lighting circuits in most areas. However, it is important to check with local building codes and regulations, as requirements can vary by location.

Electrical Sheathing is various forms of metallic or non-metallic covering over conductors. Nonmetallic-Sheathed Cable is what is known by the brand name Romex.
For 14/2 NM cable, a 14 AWG equipment grounding conductor is used.
The most commonly used wiring method for residential use is called nonmetallic sheathed cable. Other types of wiring methods are knob and tube, as well as service entrance cable.
