Aristarchus of Samos, was the first known person to have presented a heliocentric model of the solar system, placing the Sun, not the Earth, at the center of the known universe.

He also believed that the stars were very far away and not, as believed to lie just outside the orbit of Saturn.

Using the Moon as a datum, Aristarchus calculated that the Sun must be about 18 -> 20 times further away than the Moon. Although wrong, the correct figure is 400 times, it was sufficient to last until the 1600's.
