Hipparchus was best known for his contributions in the fields of astronomy and mathematics. He is often referred to as the father of trigonometry and made significant advancements in mapping the stars, developing the first quantitative models of the solar system, and discovering the precession of the equinoxes.

Aristarchus of Samos, was the first known person to have presented a heliocentric model of the solar system, placing the Sun, not the Earth, at the center of the known universe.

He also believed that the stars were very far away and not, as believed to lie just outside the orbit of Saturn.

Using the Moon as a datum, Aristarchus calculated that the Sun must be about 18 -> 20 times further away than the Moon. Although wrong, the correct figure is 400 times, it was sufficient to last until the 1600's.
