You first need to determine where the supply voltage is coming from. Black is hot and white is neutral. All the neutrals are connected together. The hot is switched. You need to get power to the fan wires and switch the hot side to the fan.

How is a ceiling fan with lights wired?

Answer for Canada, USA and countries running a 60 Hz supply service. On most ceiling fan installations a three wire feed is used. A "hot" wire and the neutral feeder are brought to a two gang switch box from the distribution panel. One switch will control the fan and the other switch will control the light if there is one. On this type of installation the "hot" wire is connected to the top of both switches. The incoming neutral and the white from the three wire cable connect together in the switch box. From the bottom of the switch that controls the fan connect the black wire. From the bottom of the switch that controls the light connect the red wire. From the switch box the three wire feeder connects to the fixture box. In the fixture box the black wire of the three wire connects to the fan's black wire. The red wire of the three wire connects to the fan's blue wire to control the light. The neutral connects to the fan's white wire. The green wire from the fan connects to the bare ground wire of the three wire cable. As always, if you are in doubt about what to do, the best advice anyone should give you is to call a licensed electrician to advise what work is needed. Before you do any work yourself, on electrical circuits, equipment or appliances always use a test meter to ensure the circuit is, in fact, de-energized. IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY SURE YOU CAN DO THIS JOB SAFELY AND COMPETENTLY REFER THIS WORK TO QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS.

How do you find out which outlet the light switch controls?

Plug a table lamp into the receptacle and turn on the switch. Make sure that you do both the top and bottom positions on the receptacle Some times just the top half or bottom half of a duplex receptacle are switched and the other half is regular un-switched power.
