You cannot.

A centimetre is a measure of length or distance in 1-dimensional space while a square centimetre is a measure of area in 2-dimensional space. The two measure different things and, according to basic principles of dimensional analysis, conversion from one to the other is not valid.

With extreme difficulty without knowing the depth of the depth of the area given by the square centimeters to get its volume, and the density of the substance in that volume so that you can then use the conversion:

mass = density x volume.

Of course, the measurements would have to be in suitable units:

  • the depth in cm to give the volume in cm3; and
  • the density in kg/cm3

Alternatively, you may be given the planar density, as is the case with printer paper, for example (in grams per square metre).

To convert square inches to square centimeters, multiply the number of square inches by 6.452. This is because 1 square inch is equal to approximately 6.452 square centimeters.
