# How do you convert square yards to square feet?

My father is a carpet installer so we used this all the time. One yard = 3 feet, so an area that is 3 feet by 3 feet would equal one square yard. Since that area contains 9 square feet, then 9 sf = 1 sq yd.

To convert a room measurement, multiply the length x width to arrive at the square feet and then divide by 9 (since there are 9 sf in a square yard) to arrive at the square yards.

12 x 20 = 240 sf / 9 = 26.66 sq yds Study guides

Multiply square feet by 0.111 to get square yards. A yard is a unit of distance. A square foot is a unit of area. The two units are therefore incompatible. 1 square yard = 9 square feet

to convert square yards to square feet, multiply by 9. Multiply square yards by nine to get square feet. To convert from square yards to square feet, multiply by 9. You can't convert square feet (a measure of area) into yards (a measure of distance).

However,

1 foot = 1/3 yards

and

1 sq ft = 1/9 sq yards multiplying the length of the yard times the width Earn +20 pts
