My father is a carpet installer so we used this all the time. One yard = 3 feet, so an area that is 3 feet by 3 feet would equal one square yard. Since that area contains 9 square feet, then 9 sf = 1 sq yd.

To convert a room measurement, multiply the length x width to arrive at the square feet and then divide by 9 (since there are 9 sf in a square yard) to arrive at the square yards.

12 x 20 = 240 sf / 9 = 26.66 sq yds

To convert square yards to square feet, you can multiply the number of square yards by 9, as there are 9 square feet in 1 square yard. So, if you have 5 square yards, you would have 45 square feet (5 x 9).

You can't convert square feet (a measure of area) into yards (a measure of distance).

However,

1 foot = 1/3 yards

and

1 sq ft = 1/9 sq yards
