learn that kilo is 1000. always.

I wish life were that simple. Unfortunately, the techies got there and decided to refer to 210 as "kilo" as well. So a kilobyte is not 1000 bytes but 210 = 1024 bytes. Near enough to 1000 but not "always" as in the original answer.
