The easy answer is that a yard is a little less than a meter. And, it is a good approximation if you can round up a bit (well, quite a bit, see below).

2.54 cm/inch.
2.54(cm/inch) * 36 inches = 91.44 cm

To calculate the number of inches in a meter, one would do the opposite.
100 cm / 2.54 (cm/inch) = 39.37 inches.
