In the United States, when people say "a ton," they're most often thinking of the short ton of 2,000 pounds.

In the UK, a ton is equal to the long ton of 2,240 pounds.

Depends which "ton" you want:

  • 1 US (short) ton = 2,000 pounds
  • 1 UK (long) ton = 2,240 pounds
  • 1 metric ton (tonne) = 1000 kg ≈ 2,205 pounds

The international unit for mass is the kilogram; the tonne (t) is a multiple of kg but is only an "accepted" unit in SI - the correct name is megagram.

Short and long ton are obsolete units that make many confusions.
There are 2,000 pounds in every ton.
