Technically the 2 units are not equvalent. Ton is a unit of mass, Newton is a unit of force. Weight is a force. "The gravitational atraction of an object to another object." so it is measured in Newtons. We also need to define what we mean by a ton. There are 3 definitions! The USA still use the short ton which is approx 907.2kg. In the UK we used to use the long ton which is approx 1016kg In the Metric system (which most of the World now uses) there is the tonne which is exactly 1000kg. We can convert from Kilograms to Newtons using the formula F = m x a where F is force, m is mass and a is acceleration. On the surface of the Earth the acceleration due to gravity is about 9.81 m/s/s (it varies a bit depending where you are) so: 1 short ton has a weight of approx 8900 Newtons. 1 long ton has a weight of approx 9967 Newtons. 1 tonne has a weight of approx 9810 Newtons. . For info on the surface of the moon (where the acceleration due to gravity is about 1.62 m/s/s): 1 short ton would have a weight of approx 1470 Newtons 1 long ton would have a weight of approx 1646 Newtons 1 tonne would have a weight of approx 1620 Newons
