Large counties (at least in proportion to the size of the state) occur most often within states with lower population levels. Wyoming is the tenth-largest state, but has the least number of people. Thus, the state is divided into just 23 counties. Also consider Alaska (where they are called Boroughs) which has the top five largest US counties including one that is bigger then Texas. Of course there are exceptions like San Bernardino County California with over 1.7 million residents and an area of 20,052,50 square miles which makes it almost as large as West Virginia or 12 Delawares.

Alaska is the US State where you would most likely find counties with large areas due to its vast geographical size and relatively low population density.
