Inches or centimeters
I think I saw that you tried to include that your units were in inches. this is not a metric unit to start. convert inches to centimetres. then multiply the length by the width to get your answer in cm^2, a metric unit
It turns out that decimeters are seldom used in practice. Instead, millimeters, centimeters and meters are normally used. Of course, in theory you could measure any length in decimeters - and especially lengths which are in an appropriate range, somewhere between about 1-100 decimeters.
The small ruler that's about as long as a large book, is usually 30 centimeters. There are 100 centimeters in a ruler, so there is 0.3 meters in that small ruler. You can get 1 meter rulers, which reach from the floor to about your chest, or to the height of a tall table.maybe a metre i don't know why are you asking me for?
You would typically use centimeters (cm) or millimeters (mm) to measure the width of a book. These units provide a more precise measurement for smaller objects like books.

Instruments such as calipers, rulers, and tape measures can be used to measure the width of a book. These instruments provide an accurate measurement of the book's width in either inches or centimeters.
