In the US a ton is equal to 2000lbs. So things that are bigger than 2000lbs are often measured in tons. for example instead of saying the boat weighs 1,000,000 lbs, it's easier to say the boat weighs 500 Tons.

Cranes often are rated in tons for there maximum capacity for the same reason, instead of having a 100,000 LB crane you would say a 50 ton crane.

Crane Scales can measure in lbs, tons, kg or any other unit of measure.
