The "p" means "potential" and the "OH" means "hydroxide". OH- is the hydroxide ion. In chemistry, pOH is the inverse log of the concentration of hydroxide in a solution:

pOH = -log [OH-]

To better understand, think of the more common term pH. pH gives a measure of the concentration of hydrogen in a solution.

pH = -log [H+]

If the pH is less than 7, the solution is basic. If it is more than 7, the solution is acidic. The scale runs from 0 to 14.

If the pH is 7 exactly, the solution is neutral. Distilled water has a pH of 7. And what is water? H+ and OH-! Therefore, if the pH is 7, there are equal amounts of hydrogen and hydroxide, or pure water.

An easy way to calculate pOH is to find the pH and subtract that from 14 (the top of the pH scale). Basically, pH + pOH = 14. So an easy way to find pOH is:

pOH = 14-pH
