There is a different between a postive and negative ion. Ion's depend on protons and electrons. If there is 4 protons and 5 electrons , it would make it a negative ion because the extra electron would have no other neutron to pair up with to make it a balance atom. If there is 4 protons and 3 electrons , it would make it a postive ion because the extra proton doesn't have any other electron to pair up to , to cancel it out. When there is an even amount of electrons and protons then the atom would be a balance atom. So therefore it would have no charge. So therefore telling the difference form a postive and negative ion depends on the extra proton or neutron.

A positive ion has lost one or more electrons, resulting in a net positive charge. A negative ion has gained one or more electrons, resulting in a net negative charge. Positive ions are attracted to negative ions and form ionic bonds to create compounds.
