September 2012 - the electric vehicle land speed record was broken by a 100% battery electric car at Elvington airfield near York in the UK.

The Nemesis, which is a heavily-modified Lotus Exige which was originally bought off eBay, travelled with an average speed of 151.6 mph (244km/h).

It smashed the previous electric vehicle land speed record of 137 mph by more than 14 mph.

In terms of production electric vehicles the Tesla Roadster has an official top speed of 125 mph (but it will set you back over £80K). For mere mortals Nissan LEAF and the Renault Fluence have official top speeds of 90mph and 84mph respectively.
