Microalgae (usually single celled organisms of a size so small the individuals can only be seen under a microscope) can, and under favorable conditions often do, duplicate themselves every day or more often than once a day.

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) did a long study of the potential of using algae for the purpose of "growing" vegetable oils (the same kind of oils now used to make "biodiesel"). In at least one report they say that the specific species Navicula acceptata has a reproduction rate (under the best of conditions) of 3.8 times per day. That is to say, 1 cell doubles to 2 cells, 2 cells double to 4 cells, 4 cells double to 8 cells, and 8 cells double to 16 cells (actually about 13 cells to allow for the x.8 statistic) in approximately 24 hours. So if you imagine potatoes growing at this rate and you started with a 5 lb sack of potatoes , by the end of the day, that would be a 64 lb. sack of potatoes, which is impressive, but now imagine that your 5 lb. sack actually is ALGAE, and that every 5 pounds grows at that 3.8 doublings per day. In one week (you should probably check my math) that 5 pounds would grow into 281,000,000 lb.

Kelp is known to be the fastest-growing plant in the ocean, with some species able to grow up to two feet per day under ideal conditions. This rapid growth rate is attributed to the nutrient-rich waters in which kelp typically grows.
