Horses that are bred for speed, like Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds, can reach 40 mph for short periods of time. I would say the average fro horses overall is about 33-35 mph... it really depends on the horse. I've seen Thoroughbreds only get to 20 and I've ridden my Paint up to about 43.

A walk is generally about 2-5 mph, a trot 5-8, and a canter should be between 15-20. A hand-gallop could be anywhere from 20-30, and a full-out-hang-on-for-your-life gallop could be anything higher than that

Quarter horses have been clocked at speed of 55 mph over short distances! They are the fastest horse breed. Thoroughbreds only reach speeds of 40mph, and other breeds can only go to 25-30mph.
