Water of crystallisation - Refers to water molecules that form an essential part of the crystalline structure of a compound

There are experiments that can be done the one we did at college was adding a carbonate to an acid then heating the solution to dryness and then cover and leave for a few days to crystallise. then reheat the crystals and weigh how much more water has been removed through heating.

Water of crystallization refers to the water molecules that are chemically bound to a compound as it crystallizes. This water is essential for maintaining the crystal structure of the compound and can be driven off through heating or exposure to low humidity. Removing water of crystallization can sometimes lead to changes in the physical properties of a compound.
