Units grow or decrease in multiples of 1 000. micro, milli, base, kilo, mega; are millionth, thousandth, unit, thousand, million.

There are prefixes for tenths and tens, deci and deca, but these are never used. Prefixes for hundredths and hundreds are centi, and hect, these are only used for centimetre and hectare.

The metric system is based on a factor of 10, which means that each unit is 10 times larger or smaller than the unit before or after it. This allows for easy conversion between different units by simply moving the decimal point.
