The current metric system is officially known as SI units, from the French for international system.

It is based on the metre, kilogram, second metric system which used the metre, kilogram and second as its fundamental units.

Before the metre, kilogram, second, there was an older version based on centimetre, gram, second.

The metric system is based on the decimal system, which means that units are organized in powers of 10. This makes conversions between different units easier and more straightforward than in other systems.

The metric system is based on the decimal system and fixed, non arbitrary constants. The Imperial system used arbitrary measurements for each unit like a yard or a foot. The metric system originally used one ten-millionth of the distance from the North Pole to the equator along the meridian running near Dunkirk in France and Barcelona in Spain as the metre (Now it is defined as the length of the path travelled by light in vacuum in 1⁄299,792,458 of a second.). One gram was the mass of one cubic centimetre of water. Similarly for the other units of measurement.

There are two primary features of the metric system. One is that all the units are based on powers of ten, a millimeter is 1/1000 of a meter while a kilometer is 1000 meters. This makes conversions between units easier. The second feature is that the basis of the measures make sense. A milliliter is one square centimeter of water at maximum density which is also one gram.
