Up until 1959 US inches, feet and yards were longer than Imperial inches, feet, and yards. Even within the Imperial system the ounce can mean two different sizes; one for ordinary measurements, and a heavier one for precious metals.
This confusion can easily be eradicated if the system is standardised and a metre is always the same; a litre is always the same; a newton is always the same etc.
