Kilo is the prefix for 1000.

However, electronic storage is based on binary arithmetic. As it happens, 210 is 1024. This was thought to be sufficiently close enough to 1000 to extend to use of kilo as a prefix for 1024 as well.

Similarly, giga is actually a prefix for 1,000,000 but is also used for 1,048,576 (= 220) and so on.
