Millimetres are small. When measuring a pencil you could use millimetres and not have a decimal. A pencil might be 158 mm long whereas if you use centimetres this would become 15.8 cm.

In the building trade it is common to use millimetres for length measurement - a room 4000 x 4500 means a room 4 metres by 4.5 metres. Buying timber (lumber) is in millimetres. No decimals or fractions.
