Some years ago I worked for the advertising agency that handled the McDonald's account in Australia. One morning I arrived at work and was greeted by great rejoicing - a new survey had just been released which showed McDonald's moving up from number three in the world's most recognised symbols to number two.
Number one? The Coca-Cola logo.
What really worried me was that McDonald's had moved to number two by overtaking the Islamic moon and star - the symbol of Islam. As a committed Muslim, the idea that the golden arches had surpassed the symbol of peace, was just a little distasteful. Pretty soon after that I left that ad agency, and ended up at theological college!
