To do this sort of calculation with fractions, it is necessary to turn them into improper (or 'top heavy') fractions.... 31/4 = 13/4 11/8 = 9/8 Now we can set out the calculation in the normal manner.... 13/4 ÷ 9/8 But, when we are dealing with fractions we don't do division in the normal way, what is done is to invert the divisor and treat the caluclation as a multiplication. This changes the calculation to this.... 13/4 x 8/9 and we can then multiply the 13 by the 8, and the 4 by the 9 and we get 104/36 which can be simplified to 26/9, or 28/9.
