If the questioner is really just asking the area of the floor in "square feet" it is reasonable to assume that the silo is actually round, since most silos are, and the dimension is given as a "radius", normally a specification of a round thing. In that case the area is given by: A = pi * R^2 or 3.14 * 10 * 10 = 314 square feet. It is conceivable that the questioner is seeking the "squared area" if there is such a thing, the area that the space would occupy if it were square (which is the same as if the silo were in fact square and has been oddly dimensioned). In that case, the original answer: A = 20 x 20 = 400 square feet (where it is assumed that the "radius" had to be doubled to get the length of the side of the "square" area) would be correct.

How is Floor Area Ratio calculated in Chicago's Zoning Ordinance?

Take the lot size and multiply it by the Floor Area Ratio. For example, on a 5,000 square foot lot with a 2.0 FAR you could construct a building with 10,000 square feet of total floor area (the floorspace of each floor above ground added together). Keep in mind that there are other restrictions as well, such as building height and setback issues that could keep you from using the total allowable building area per your FAR.
