Having a due proportion, or comparative relation; being in suitable proportion or degree; as, the parts of an edifice are proportional., Relating to, or securing, proportion., Constituting a proportion; having the same, or a constant, ratio; as, proportional quantities; momentum is proportional to quantity of matter., Any number or quantity in a proportion; as, a mean proportional., The combining weight or equivalent of an element.
Lets say we have the number 500 and we want to find 50% of this number, this is easy to to in your head so i'm using an easy number so you see how the equation works. you simply divide the number you have by 100 (converting it into a percentage) then multiply it by the percentage you want to know 500/100=5 5*50=250, so 50% of 500 is 250. quantity/100*percentage value. If you have a percentage of a number and you want to know what number that percentage is of a quantity you do (sticking with the same numbers): 50%/100*500=250
A proportion is simply a number.

The quantity in unit rates refers to the amount or number being measured or compared in relation to a single unit of another quantity. It helps to determine the rate at which the original quantity is changing or occurring.
Many measures of profitability of a hotel are based on ratios, proportions or percentages. For example, the occupancy rate is the ratio of the number of occupied room-nights to the total number of room-nights (or the proportion). Another contributor to the profitability is the percentage mark-up on food and drink which the hotel serves. A measure of a hotel's "success" is the percentage of the customers in its price range which it manages to attract and how that proportion changes with percentage discounts offered on rooms.
