Well, one way is to divide each potato equally into thirds and give each child one-third of each potato, five pieces in all--five thirds.
Less chopping is involved if you give each child one whole potato and then do the careful dividing just of the remaining two. Each child gets one whole potato and two one-third potatoes.
5/3 = 1 2/3.
