All squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares. Basically, a square is a rectangle where all sides are the same length.

However, providing that the width is half of the length, or vice versa, and you join the two rectangles along the one of the sides that is longer, two rectangles can make a square.

Example: 1x2 rectangle joined with another 1x2 rectangle will make a 2x2 square.
