By using the pythagorean theorem, the square on the hypotenuse is equal to the sums of the squares on the two other sides. It states that a2 + b2 = c2 For instance if a and b are 3 and 4, then 3 squared is 9, 4 sq'd is 16 therefore 9+16=25. The square root of 25 is 5, the value for c.
