For the sake of this question I will call the 5 liter jar X and the 7 liter Jar Y . Step 1: You fill Y, and pour it into X, filling X and leaving Y with 2 liters (7-5=2) then dump X. You are left with empty X and 2 liters in Y . Step 2 Dump the 2 liters in Y into X which should be empty. Then fill Y again. then pour Y into X filling the rest of the X and and leaving 4 liters in Y (7-3=4) then dump X. You are left with empty X and 4 liters in Y . Step 3 Pour Y into X so X should have 4 liters in it and Y should be empty. Refill Y You are left with 4 liters in X and 7 liters in Y . Step 4 Pour Y into X filling X and leaving 6 liters in Y, Dump out X. Pour Y into X again filling X, this time leaving only 1 liter in Y. You are left with empty X and 1 liter in Y . Step 5 Pour Y into X, now X has only one liter in it. Fill Y. X has 1 liter Y has 7 totaling 8. . Steps Fill y(7). Pour Y(2) in X(5). Dump X(0). pour Y(0) in X(2). Fill Y(7). Pour Y(4) in X(5). Dump X(0). Pour Y(0) in X(4). Fill Y(7). Pour Y(6) in X(5). Dump X(0). Pour Y(1) in X(5). Dump X(0). Pour Y(0) in X(1). Fill Y(7). X(1) Y(7) remaining totaling (8)
